A well-placed Democratic Party source emphasized that last week’s New York Times op-ed by former President Jimmy Carter, assailing President Barack Obama for violating international law and human rights, was written on behalf of a group of Democratic Party elders who are fed up with Obama. They went to Carter and encouraged him to write the op-ed. While Obama was never mentioned by name, the Carter piece was widely understood to be a significant break with Obama, on behalf of a segment of very senior Democratic Party loyalists.
“The group who encouraged former President Carter to write the op-ed are, on average, in their 70s and 80s. They are profoundly upset with Obama, and it will become clear very soon that Carter was not merely speaking for himself,” the source explained.
