Just as your editors were attending The Schiller Institute’s conference in Germany dedicated to creating a new paradigm in culture and politics, we were happy to hear of President Michael D Higgins’ speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg citing Friedrich Schiller’s great “Ode to Joy” masterpiece. He also focused on the demoralisation arising among the unemployed and the “intellectual impotence” of the European Parliament in recognizing it. We also share John Waters’ sense of relief that his head of state was finally saying the unsayable.
