Pontiff Denounces the War-Making Empire of Monetarism

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, Pope Francis denounced the present world economic system as “unbearable… We are excluding an entire generation of young people,” pointing to the staggering youth unemployment in many countries.

He likened the system to an empire, saying “for the system to survive, wars must be made, as the big empires have always done … but a Third World War cannot be launched, therefore they take to regional wars.”

The leading economies of the world, the pontiff charged, are shaping up their balance sheets with the production and sale of weapons, sacrificing mankind to the idol of money: “If we see pictures of undernourished children in different parts of the world, we scratch our head. You simply cannot understand it. The economic system should serve man, but we have put money at the center, money as a god.”
