Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the acceptance by the Eurogroup of Greece’s new proposal have shown that there is a better way for Europe.
Deputy Doherty said:
“I welcome the Eurogroup’s acceptance of the Greek proposals. You only need to look at the emphasis Greece’s new proposals put on taxing those who can afford to pay, cracking down on tax evasion, protecting the family home and dealing with poverty to see how different the Greek approach is. We must compare this to an Irish government which has simply taxed the lower and middle incomes time and time again through new taxes on property and water and an increase in VAT.”
“And now this new way has won the support of all the Eurogroup. This is proof that a better way was always possible.”
“I am sure if there had been less Eurogroup governments concerned with their own electoral fortunes an even bigger shift could have taken place. I look forward to the new Syriza government making proposals on debt and once again call on the Irish government to actively and vocally support those trying to improve Europe and protect its most vulnerable instead of hiding in the corner.”
