Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD today accused Fine Gael Minister Leo Varadkar of “outlandish claims” and “deliberate misrepresentation” of Sinn Féin in remarks to an Irish American audience on Friday.
Gerry Adams said:
“Leo Varadkar, as Minister for Health, is responsible for unprecedented chaos in Irish hospitals which has seen women, some over 100 years of age lying on trolleys for 25 hours.
“He has abjectly failed to tackle the crisis of a crumbling, two-tier health service which has escalated under his term of office.
“Rather than face up to his political responsibilities, Mr Varadkar prefers to engage in misrepresentation and to propagate entirely untrue and outlandish claims about Sinn Féin foreign policy.
“Sinn Féin recognises and fully supports the crucial role of US foreign direct investment in Ireland.
“Sinn Féin is also unequivocal in its condemnation of fundamentalist terrorism. For Mr Varadkar to imply otherwise is despicable.
“From his remarks, it is clear that Leo Varadkar is envious of Sinn Féin’s excellent relationships with American citizens, including business people as well as the party’s ongoing and very positive engagement with US civic society.
“Fortunately the vast majority of people here, as well as Irish Americans will see his electorally-motivated remarks for what they are.”
